Also the way the drivers are handled in game seems to be still the same and not have been changed for years. My own little mod is based on a very old mod and still works with 1.37. Could be a language issue maybe, as there are driver lists for each language.

The game picks random jobs for each driver that are appropriate for that driver's skills. You need to do nothing. What the player can do is assign trucks to garages (that you own) and assign drivers to trucks.
